As part of our blog, we will be presenting a series of Tips from The Spa - which will offer advice and products recommended by our experienced Spa team to help you keep your skin in tip-top shape in the changing seasons.

In Central Otago we have huge variation in temperature and humidity depending on the season, with temperatures ranging from sub-zero in the Winter to over 30+ in the Summer. Exposure to these elements means your skin has a roller coaster of conditions to compete with, which can result in dryness, congestion, or a decrease in blood circulation.

One of the ways we like to combat the elements at The Spa at Millbrook is by using Body Brushing - the topic of this Tips from The Spa blog.

What is body brushing?

Dry body brushing is a massage technique used by many spas the world over. A traditional natural health process, it involves brushing the skin while dry, then followed with a bath or shower.  Many of the benefits  of dry brushing are felt more than seen , with users left feeling energised and renewed.

All of our spa body treatments start with dry body brushing using high quality Elemis brushes, which we also retail so you can continue to get these great benefits at home. Use every day before showering, dry on dry skin, in long sweeping motions toward your heart. Our brushes are made with natural cactus bristles and when looked after will last a lifetime. Remember to drink plenty of water to help eliminate toxins.

Why we love Dry Brushing:

  • It helps to shed skin cells and encourages new cell renewal, resulting in smoother and brighter skin. it can also help reduce and resolve any ingrown hairs
  • It helps with improving vascular blood circulation and lymphatic drainage - by releasing toxins it encourages the body to rid itself of metabolic waste and run more efficiently
  • It rejuvenates the nervous system by stimulating nerve endings in the skin, leaving it feeling revived and fresher
  • It can help with muscle tone and can even out distribution of fat deposits
  • It can clear blocked pores opening them to better absorption of nutrients

Did you know Dry Brushing can help reduce cellulite?
Increasing the circulation to the skin, Dry Brushing can reduce the appearance of cellulite. Cellulite itself is toxic material that accumulates in your body's fat cells, so a good place to start if you are having issues with cellulite can be dry brushing.
