Queenstown restaurant The Millhouse wins exclusive US Magazine Award for Wine Excellence
The Millhouse Restaurant in Queenstown has been awarded the prestigious Wine Award for Excellence by US Magazine, Wine Spectator, making it one of only a handful of restaurants in New Zealand to be awarded the accolade.
The annual wine awards by influential US magazine, Wine Spectator, applauds restaurants with a wine list of over 100 that accurately match the restaurant’s food and character.
The Millhouse Manager, Paul Hignett, said the award was in recognition of the extensive wine list of exceptional wines on offer at The Millhouse and the work he and the team of chefs have dedicated to wine and food matching.
He said: “The Millhouse menu utilizes seasonal, local produce and the menu changes slightly every 2-3 weeks to reflect produce availability and seasonal freshness.”
Hignett added: “To ensure our wine list always complements the menu, we have a focus on local Central Otago and New Zealand wine that matches the tastes of Central Otago on the menu. We also have a small selection of Australian wines including Shiraz. A lot of our clients are Australian and love to enjoy a Shiraz with their meal and this adds another dimension to our wine list. We also include some French wines on the list including Syrah, Pinot Noir and of course Champagne.”
Hignett says The Millhouse offers its customers, who come from all over the world, the best wines from around the globe, and that he regularly researches new wines from a variety of sources including Wine Spectator, Decanter, Michael Cooper in New Zealand and Bob Campbell.
According to Hignett, “Good wine shouldn’t cost the earth and everyone should be able to enjoy the perfect wine matched with the food on our menu. As a trained sommelier, I take great pride in ensuring the wine our guests enjoy matches the food they have chosen and believe The Millhouse wine list perfectly reflects our local Central Otago menu, the ambience of the restaurant and what our guests desire.
Nestled amid 500 acres of pristine grounds at Millbrook Resort in Arrowtown, The Millhouse fine dining restaurant is brimming with character and part of the building is the original wall from the old mill house which operated when the resort was a wheat farm during the gold rush era. With the mill house water wheel still running, the Millhouse restaurant ambience is warm, inviting and relaxed, offering the best local ingredients and wines to match.
Hignett said: “The Millhouse is a restaurant full of ambience and character and I like to think our menu and wine list matches this setting. In the winter, the log fire is roaring and the winter menu of Otago meats is ideally matched with local Pinot Noir or an Australian Shiraz. In the summer, when the menu is lighter in texture and taste, we tend to go for a light Pinot Gris or Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.”
