Millbrook Founder receives New Year Honour

Mr Eiichi Ishii’s first involvement with Millbrook Resort was in 1987, when the encouragement of a Harvard University colleague convinced him to invest. With the resort facing tougher times in 1990, Ishii took over the reins and eventually gained full ownership.

This decisive step was the first of many to steer the development of the resort into the luxurious 5-star destination it is today and his dedication to Millbrook over the last three decades has been recognised this summer with his naming as an honorary member of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

Mr Ishii is being honoured for his services to New Zealand-Japan relations and golf and tourism, and his vision for the 500 acres he calls home in Arrowtown has been at the centre of this.

Although running a large art supplies and digital importing company in Japan, Too Corporation, Ishii’s focus for Millbrook is less on growth and more on care and enjoyment; “Whether it is more profitable or less profitable I don't know but I created some place where people - little kids, parents, grandparents - feel happy and that's good enough for me."

The resort has gone from strength to strength under his leadership, hosting Commonwealth heads of Government, United States Presidents, and members of the British Royal family. Millbrook is also renowned for its co- hosting of the NZ Open, which this year Ishii has taken role of guarantor for the event to secure its on-going importance to the Queenstown region.

Director of Operations Brian Howie said “Mr Ishii’s long-term commitment to Millbrook and our region is something we are extremely fortunate to have.  Along with son Gota and his wider family, Mr Ishii has provided a strong strategic vision over the years which has allowed us to focus on delivering consistent excellence to our guests.  Millbrook is in great health and it is wonderful the Ishii family’s role in this success is being recognised.”
