Since moving to Queenstown, I have been fortunate to explore the incredible trails around the region. Some of the best trails are only steps away from Millbrook, which makes it very convenient to slip away after work for a hike. Whether I’m in the mood for a leisurely stroll or a challenging trek, the variety of trails cater to all preferences. Arrowtown, in particular, has many interconnecting trails which offer breath-taking views that continue to captivate me.

For those planning a stay at Millbrook, I’ve recommended some walking/running trails below:

1. Lake Hayes Walkway (7.9km loop): A gem in the Queenstown Trail, encircling the picturesque Lake Hayes. Its gentle terrain makes it a haven for walkers, runners, and cyclists. It’s also the perfect track for kids with the abundance of native birdlife.

2. Millennium Walkway in Arrowtown: An easy track along the Arrow River that’s just a short distance from the resort. For a challenge, continue onto Tobin’s Track (6.6km up and down). This track is a gradual steep climb that offers panoramic views over Arrowtown and the basin. Extend the walk by taking the New Chums Loop Track (7.2km). This trail begins halfway up Tobin’s Track and offers even more spectacular views.

3. Sawpit Gully Loop Trail (7.9km): Starting near the Chinese Settlement in Arrowtown, this trail offers amazing views into the Whakatipu basin. I recommend walking this trail counter-clockwise for an easier ascent and be sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes for the occasional stream crossing and slippery trails.

4. Big Hill Trail: A more advanced option, this medium to high fitness grade trail takes around 5-6 hours to complete. Starting from Arrowtown, it traverses various terrains including forest, bush, open fields, steep climb, steep downhill and river crossings. The climb might be a challenge, but the 360-degree views make every effort worthwhile. Not only will you see superior panoramas of the Whakatipu Basin but also its surrounding mountains. Remember to take breaks when necessary and maintain a slow and steady pace during your ascent and descent.

As you gear up for these adventures, ensure your backpack is packed with water, snacks, and for those hot summer days, be prepared with a hat and sunscreen. The sun is even more intense at the top of the hills!
These recommendations promise an outdoor adventure that guarantees breath-taking views and a much-needed serotonin boost.

Indulge in the Millbrook experience and explore these trails right at your doorstep first-hand.
